“The economy is good, and consumer confidence is high, so families are ready to spend on Halloween this year,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Retailers are stocking up to supply children, pets, and adults with their favorite decorations, candy, and costumes for the season.”
The NRF’s annual survey found that 175 million Americans will celebrate the holiday, with over half of celebrants planning on dressing in costume. Expect to see plenty of Disney princesses, Star Wars characters and superheroes at your door.
Pet costumes are still the rage with nearly 20% of celebrants planning to dress up their pet this year. “Out of 31.3 million Americans planning to dress up their pets in costume, millennials (25-34) are most likely to dress up their pets, the highest we have seen in the history of our surveys.”
Pumpkin won out as the top pet costume (11%), with hot dog not far behind (7.6%). Will you be dressing up your dog or cat this Halloween?

Consumers will spend a record $9.1 billion during Halloween 2017.
U.S. consumers will take to the retail markets Halloween 2017 and spend a whopping $9.1 billion on Halloween costumes, decorations, candy and more, making it the largest spending for the spooky holiday to date.
The National Retail Federation reports that consumers are preparing to be the baddest witches on the block, spending almost a billion more dollars this year on supplies than in 2016 ($8.4 billion). And the men are really stepping up their game, spending on average $20 more per costume than women.
“Americans are planning to spend more than ever as they gear up for Halloween,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Retailers are helping customers celebrate in style with a huge selection of costumes, candy and decorations to cater to ghosts and goblins of all ages.”
From 2017 blockbuster hits like Wonder Woman and Spiderman, it’s no wonder the most popular costumes for kids are superheroes. And let’s not forget about Fido — the most popular costume for pets for Halloween 2017 is a pumpkin.

It seems to me that Halloween merchandise is on display in stores and online earlier and earlier every year. A spokesperson for the National Retail Federation (NRF) last month confirmed this when she pointed to a spike in consumer Halloween spending in recent years. Halloween, she says, has been on the upswing in recent years in terms of the number of people celebrating and what they’re spending. And retailers have certainly taken notice. In 2014 consumers spent an average of $77 on Halloween candy, costumes and decorations – the highest amount ever recorded. While an estimated four million adults will don the ever-classic witch costume on Halloween this year, it seems like they’ll be spending less to do so; the NRF is predicting the average family will spend $27.33 on costumes, down slightly from 2014. Total spending in 2015 though is still predicted to top $6.9 billion. Check out our infographic below to see how the Halloween supply chain delivers the tricks and treats.
