So much to say, so little time. Supply chain marketing during Covid-19 — leaning in is better than backing out.
Turmoil does not quite begin to describe the situation that supply chain companies have experienced lately. The Covid-19 pandemic threw in just a few weeks the finely calibrated, just-in-time supply chains into a state of disarray. In the midst of the struggle to get product from Point A to Point B — while also ensuring the health and safety of employees — many companies had little choice but to adopt an all-hands-on-deck approach.
We saw it ourselves as our clients were suddenly buried in challenges that only weeks earlier had posed no issues at all — securing electronic parts overseas, locating warehouse space, finding freight forwarders, moving product out of port, and more.
If supply chain marketing during Covid-19 had to take a backseat during the initial phase of the crisis, beware of staying quiet for too long. Letting your marketing channels sit idle for an extended period, or drastically scaling back at a time when communication matters more than ever, is not a risk-free strategy.
Let us explain why:
Covid-19 supply chain marketing: Lean in or risk losing ground
Go silent — or stay strong
In the wake of the first shockwaves of the Covid-19 pandemic, supply chain companies understandably had to devote extensive resources to regain their footing. Few industries felt the impact as deeply as the supply chain. For some, the disruption opened up a flood of new business, sending the entire organization scrambling to keep up. For others, it meant every budget line item had to be scrutinized.
At the same time, we noted another challenge brewing for busy organizations: Maintaining a strong online presence during a tumultuous time. How do instill confidence in current customers and gain new leads if you say little or nothing at all?
After the first flurry of crisis-related marketing emails that many of us received (“We are here to help”), some companies — overwhelmed by the scope of work — let their social media accounts go silent and blog pages seized being updated.
The risk? Taking a break or withdrawing altogether could put your organization in a worse position later.
A McKinsey study underscores this point — conventional downturn strategies can actually hamper recovery. The performance analysis of 700 high–tech companies during two decades of market contractions showed “making obvious moves (for instance, cutting costs) as well as counterintuitive ones (such as increasing sales and marketing expenditures) quickly can improve a company’s position when the recovery begins.”
Interestingly, the best-performing companies increased their marketing and advertising spend relative to their competitors, but also compared to their own spending when times were better. However, from our perspective, the issue is far from just spend but identifying the most effective marketing channels and tactics at a time when resources may be scarce.
Weaken SEO — or make it soar
The risk of cutting back on supply chain marketing during Covid-19 also extends to search engine optimization (SEO). Rather than a one-time project, SEO needs constant attention to hum. It is the foundation of your effort to improve the quality and quantity of unpaid website traffic by increasing the visibility of your site or page to search engine users.
SEO and content go together
The completion of a well-designed website is only the beginning. If there is anything SEO demands more than anything else, it is content. You simply cannot ace one without the other. New, key-word optimized content is what makes SEO tick. Google Search has for years used a freshness algorithm to index pages. This means fresh content gets rapidly indexed and lands higher in search rankings than older content.
Backlinks — other reputable sites linking to your content — are also crucial to building SEO. When you provide up-to-date, insightful content, chances increase others will notice and link back to your site, especially during a time when so many are online searching for information. The same goes for backlinks and traffic to your site generated by social media.
So, what is the risk of going quiet?
The short of it: SEO can suffer. If content was the backbone of your marketing strategy before the pandemic hit, your organization has likely established a history of domain authority and is, as a result, in a better position to weather the storm. But not even the best of sites can escape the reality of what matters to search engines. Although you can still squeeze juice out of old keywords, lack of new content puts your organization at a disadvantage when search engines evaluate your pages in competition with countless others.
So much to say — can you find the time?
In many respects, supply chain marketing during Covid-19 comes down to this: Who would you want to do business with during a time of great uncertainty? What signals do you want to send to your audience? What do you want to tell them? As challenging as it may be, leaning in is better than backing out.

Organizations implementing sustainable supply chain practices face increased expenses associated with upfront investments. But new strategies are emerging to change that.

Sustainability is on-trend in the business world. But, how do you view sustainable initiatives — a debilitating upfront investment or an exciting opportunity to enhance your company’s bottom line? Many small businesses find themselves in the former camp. However, new strategies are emerging that may change that.
What does sustainable practice mean?
A recent study conducted by Llamasoft and the Economist Intelligence Unit surveyed 250 senior executives from manufacturing and retail companies worldwide. The report showed that 93% of supply chain organizations have implemented environmental initiatives. Still, more plan to do so in the next five years.
Regulatory standards and consumer priorities are making it increasingly urgent for companies of all sizes to rethink their operations in terms of sustainability. A 2018 Nielsen study found that 81% of global consumers are convinced that companies have a responsibility to employ policies that prevent further harm to the planet. The U.S. has seen increased regulation related to environmental protection, including emissions standards and the recovery/reuse of packaging material. In the U.K., companies employing more than 500 people are required to report on their sustainability practices, and, according to Nielsen, 71% of Europeans place a high value on maintaining ethical and sustainable lifestyles.
Whether this means costs or benefits for your organization depends a great deal on what exactly you understand sustainability to mean. While it’s easy to associate sustainability with hard-to-achieve environmental goals, industry experts are starting to think a little more capaciously about how companies can participate in a sustainable supply chain. If we think about sustainability as “meeting the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own,” then organizations can find more flexible strategies for achieving sustainability that suit their needs and abilities.
Organizations implementing green initiatives face increased expenses associated with upfront investments. New equipment, more expensive sourcing costs, and the personnel required to oversee these changes make the early stages of investing in sustainable practices a daunting prospect for many companies. And the obstacles don’t end there. According to Llamasoft’s study, significant challenges facing sustainability initiatives include the difficulty of monitoring complex supply chains and the need for organizational structures that can implement new policies. Interestingly, 38% of executives surveyed cite the costs associated with these challenges as a deterrent to implementing further initiatives.
Yet 33% reported that their companies had initiated sustainability drives because of the benefits to their bottom line. What accounts for the difference?
Sustainable practices: the bottom line
As the survey indicates, sustainability and profitability are not actually mutually exclusive options. Unlike some sustainability initiatives that require large upfront investment, other strategies synergize with business interests.
Efforts aimed at increasing the efficiency and agility of supply chain organizations can yield sustainability benefits as a rewarding side-effect. Consolidating shipments, efficient route design, and multi-echelon inventory optimization serve both profitability and sustainability goals. Intelligent product design that allows for efficiency of shipping and storage also contributes to carbon footprint reduction. Just think of Costco’s switch from round to square pistachio jars that enhanced supply and storage capacities and reduced the emissions of its truck fleet at the same time! Additionally, periodically overhauling operations with sustainability in mind has proven to be a good tactic for efficiency, as well, leading to more precise inventory levels and more accurate predictive management.
Upfront costs can often be quickly recouped not only through improved efficiency, but also through the brand identity enhancement associated with companies that effectively publicize their sustainability practices. Integrating green initiatives into marketing and branding strategies offers an intangible advantage beyond measurable profits or benefits to the planet.
Many businesses are looking to brand themselves as leaders in sustainability. Many large organizations successfully do this by engaging with suppliers to encourage sustainable practices throughout the supply chain. In the past, large organizations used environmental criteria as a tie-breaker in awarding contracts to smaller supply companies. But, sustainable practices are increasingly becoming a requirement in order for supply chain companies to bid in the first place. In fact, 88% of executives surveyed by Llamasoft indicated that their organizations keep track of supplier sustainability ratings, often developing their own evaluations, such as:
- Supplier scorecards that allow companies to rate the practices of other businesses in their supply chain, facilitating comparison among potential suppliers
- Public targets, which some companies require suppliers to meet in order to retain their contracts (Hewlett Packard, for instance, has launched a campaign requiring 80% of their suppliers to set certain emissions reduction targets by 2025.)
- Awards that allow companies to recognize suppliers that successfully initiate green policies
Sustainable practices for small companies
These benefits, however, are predominantly available to large global companies that have the capital, scale of operations, and leverage with trading partners to make sustainable practices practical. So, what can small businesses do to rate highly for sustainability — not to mention, gain the same branding advantages enjoyed by large organizations?
A holistic vision is key to initiating sustainable practices. Your company’s sustainability doesn’t ride solely on internal practices, such as the management of your fleet. It is just as important to consider how sustainable your suppliers are, for example.
From this perspective, selecting off-shore suppliers with lower per-unit costs can often incur longer-term disadvantages. Companies risk increasing their carbon footprint due to the greater shipping distance. Further, longer lead times necessitate holding more inventory, which equates to higher holding costs and storage facility energy emissions.
In short, the best way for any business — large or small — to practice sustainability is to optimize practices throughout the supply chain. Regulatory standards and consumer preferences are increasingly bending that way, and soon you’ll be in the minority if you’re not an active advocate for a sustainable supply chain.

Amazon has changed the way we do business. Supply chain companies need to get on board with Amazon’s e-commerce strategy or risk losing business.
It is no secret that Amazon has dominated the online retail industry. Amazon Prime has shifted consumer expectations so that waiting 5-7 business days for your online order is no longer acceptable. With people now ordering anything from couches to groceries online, companies need to get on board with this shift to e-commerce or risk missing out on many sales.
Consumers now more than ever want access to more inventory no matter if they are shopping online or in stores. Many companies report the struggle of trying to keep up with this retail giant, and current-day supply chains have certainly felt the impact.
Historically, supply chains have been set up to support a network of stores using the multichannel business model. This includes retailers managing their different channels almost as separate businesses. These channels are what businesses use to get their goods and services to their consumers. For example, many retailers use brick-and-mortar stores as well as e-commerce when it comes to selling.
So, what’s the problem with this? Well, the customer’s experience can vary depending on the shopping channel they choose. Retailers often keep their online and brick-and-mortar inventory separate, which can lead to a frustrating shopping experience for the customer.
I am sure at some point in your life you have had the experience of walking into a store looking to return an online order only to find out it must be returned to the company through the mail. Customers do not view a brand in silos, and the same selection of inventory is expected whether they are shopping online or in a physical store. Companies also run the risk of losing a sale if the exact item the consumer wants is unavailable or sold out. This is one area that allows Amazon to shine because they maintain one pool of inventory that is not separated by different channels of business.
A 2016 UPS survey found that, for the first time, shoppers revealed they bought more of their purchases online than in stores. It’s hard to tell what is the main driver behind this shift, but you can’t help but think of Amazon. It’s hard to comprehend how other companies not only compete but just even keep up with the trillion-dollar company with a revenue of $10.07 billion in 2018.
This is where the omnichannel business model comes into play. Omnichannel combines physical and online commerce to create a more seamless shopping experience for the consumer. While this business model is not a result of Amazon, it certainly puts companies in a better position to compete. The goal here is to provide the same customer experience throughout each channel while ensuring the product reaches the customer as fast as possible.
Characteristics of an omnichannel business model include:
- Buy online pick up in stores
- Stores shipping to other stores
- Dropshipping
- Order fulfillment from store
Nordstrom finding ways to differentiate from the competition
Online shopping provides many benefits to consumers, but it does not come without its own challenges. It is fairly common to buy a shirt online only to find out it is the wrong size. It can be a hassle to mail the item back, and consumers often opt out of this and chalk the purchase up to a loss. Nordstrom understands this pain point and took it upon themselves to offer a solution by creating service hubs called Nordstrom Local. The sole purpose of Nordstrom Local is to make the online shopping experience effortless. While these hubs do not contain designated inventory, they provide a handful of services to the customers.
They offer:
- Pickups
- Returns
- Stylist
- Dressing rooms
- Tailoring services
- Same-day delivery (if ordered before 2 p.m.)
- Espresso drinks, juices, wine & beer
As a consumer, what more could you ask for? The idea is that you order a variety of clothes online and have them delivered to Nordstrom Local. Here you can try on your purchases in their dressing rooms. If it doesn’t fit, no problem — they’ll mail it back for you. Need it hemmed? There’s a tailor on-site.
Nordstrom has held its own in the retail space. With 2018 revenue reaching $15.5 billion, it is hard to argue with their success. They must continue to innovate and find new ways to connect consumers to their product. Trying out this concept in Los Angeles has proven to be successful, and they are looking at opening up hubs in New York next.
Kohl’s joins forces with Amazon
Kohl’s, like many retail stores, welcomes any opportunity to increase foot traffic. Over 1,000 of their stores are now accepting returns from Amazon. Again, we see a pain point of online shopping removed for the consumer. You can bring your unwanted Amazon item to Kohl’s, and they will pack, label, and ship the item at no cost. The hope is that Amazon customers will flock to Kohl’s and hopefully buy some of their inventory on the way.
Their revenue has continued to rise over the past four years and reached 20 billion in 2018. This is a bold idea that can set Kohl’s apart from the competition by delivering a service that is unique to them. Amazon needs a way to keep its customers happy and Kohl’s needs to increase foot traffic, so it appears to be a win-win for all parties involved — including the consumer.
While Kohl’s new idea offers fewer services than Nordstrom’s, they are opening themselves up to a wider consumer market, and with this will likely come more sales. They have addressed the expected increase in expenses that will come with having to hire more employees and spending more on logistics, but the expected payoff is potentially massive.
Comparing strategies
It’s hard to tell which strategy will prove to be more profitable. The only thing that is for certain is that the shift toward e-commerce is not slowing down anytime soon, so companies need to look at how they connect consumers to their product. If the goal is to get your product to the consumer, then your supply chain needs to be tailored to this objective.
Amazon may have the upper hand now, but you never know what new idea could pop up in a few years. In the meantime, companies are faced with the harsh reality of ever-growing competition. Consumers are now hopping on their computers or mobile devices to choose from a plethora of inventory.
Amazon is not completely to blame when it comes to the evolution of consumer expectations, but they have certainly impacted them. Companies wanting to compete are left to make tough but critical decisions on what their next move will be.

New research shows Gen X business leaders are being promoted slower than their millennial and boomer counterparts. This Gen X talent looking to jump ship.

Much attention has been given to millennial employees over the years –what attracts them, what causes them to stay in a role, how to manage them differently than other generations of employees. It was a hot topic of discussion at the recent SCMA National Conference. At the same time, more baby boomers are beginning to retire. These two generations represent the back and front end of the Supply Chain industry’s talent pipeline, and they’ve been the industry’s focus. But of course, the demographic picture is broader and more nuanced than just these two generations.
Last week, we wrote an article about the importance of the emerging Generation Z – people born between 1997 or so and the 2010s – to companies seeking to win the war for Supply Chain talent. Hopefully, it helped fill in the generational picture even further.
Now a recent, very interesting article in Harvard Business Review has us wondering – are Gen X employees being forgotten by the industry? If so, what’s the impact on their careers, as well as organizations who employ them – the companies who stand to lose if dissatisfied Gen X’ers begin to jump ship?
At the risk of explaining the obvious, Gen X’ers are generally defined as being born between the mid-1960s and early 1980s – after baby boomers, but before millennials. They also came of age with a reputation for being “unambitious” – a reputation that’s just as outdated as some of the most famous slacker movies (classic though those movies may be).
As we said with our article about Gen Z, these generational distinctions are a bit fraught. Career motivations are different for every person. They’re too complex to paint everyone with the same brush. But when you can marshal enough data, you can start to learn some interesting high-level things about the hopes, dreams, and discontents of a particular demographic. In 2018, HBR worked with EY and The Conference Board to collect and analyze data from some 25,000 business leaders. Those surveyed were from all over the business landscape, but there’s data here that will be useful for Supply Chain organizations looking in the mirror.
Some of the results related to Gen X in the workplace were very interesting, in particular:
- The majority of Gen X leaders (66%) had either not been promoted in the past 5 years, or had only been promoted once.
- Baby Boomer and Millennial leaders were more likely to receive promotions (58% and 52% respectively). This is unsurprising for the boomer generation, but it is surprising that a generation younger than Gen X seems to be getting promoted more. It suggests Gen X employees are being “skipped” compared to their counterparts.
- The data found that Gen X employees are promoted typically 20%-30% slower than millennials are.
- Generally speaking, Gen X managers have more direct reports than millennial managers at the same level, indicating a higher workload.
This is the situation on the ground for Gen X talent and leaders. But how are they responding to this lack of advancement?
Gen X employees tend to be more loyal to their current employers, with 37% contemplating leaving their current role compared to 42% for millennials. They came of age before the 2008 financial crisis, in a time before the rise of the gig economy, which might account for their willingness to spend longer in a role.
But companies shouldn’t mistake this loyalty for complacency: according to the data, only 58% of Gen X employees feel that their careers are advancing at a good rate, which is significantly lower than the 65% of millennials who feel the same way. Almost one in five Gen X leaders surveyed reported an increased desire to leave their current role (18%).
Many organizations are beginning to reckon with the retirement of the baby boomer generation. They’re trying to attract and retain millennial talent by improving opportunities for career growth. Maybe they should also be doing more to nurture Gen X talent, to avoid losing that all-important middle group within the talent landscape.
As Stephanie Neal, the HBR writer puts it, a significant number of Gen X’ers might be reaching a “breaking point in” their careers. But she identified some key strategies for companies to avoid neglecting Gen X talent:
- Invest not only in continuing education for employees, but personalize it. Most Gen X employees have developed a broad base of skills, but individual needs and desires vary. Organizations should tailor their talent development to each person. Stay interviews, which we’ve written about recently, are a good strategy to better understand what motivates each individual in your organization.
- Give Gen X leaders opportunity for mentorship, and not just within the organization. We also recently wrote about the power of mentorship in a Supply Chain career, so we were happy to see HBR highlight the importance of mentorship as well. According to the research, a majority of Gen X leaders craved mentorship outside their organizations, which is enabled by things like industry conferences and professional groups. Investment in these opportunities not only helps with retaining Gen X leaders, it also offers chances to expand your supplier network or find new business.
- Hire and promote based on data, rather than gut feelings. Hiring managers often work hard to try to eliminate unconscious bias from the hiring process, but ageism often goes under the radar. Applying stereotypes to a certain cohort introduces bias that harms your process and leads to dissatisfaction. Neal uses the example of assuming that a millennial would be better at a digital marketing role than a Gen X employee. Decisions based on data such as assessments and quantifiable achievements will always be more successful than those based on stereotypes.
It’s a good start, but maybe this is issue deserves an even closer look. If we may add another tip: avoid stereotypes. Data surveying the preferences and mindsets of a large group of people can be instructive, but don’t assume that every Gen X employee is wired the same way.

Ushering qualified leads through the sales funnel requires the right kind of content at the right time. Here’s what kind of content you need for ToFu, MoFu, and BoFu.
Highlights:

Consider this statistic: 50% of qualified B2B leads aren’t ready to make a purchase when they initially convert. That means that in order to usher prospects effectively through the sales funnel, marketers need to deliver the right content for each stage of the buyer’s journey. That’s where idea of ToFu, MoFu, and BoFu content comes in.
In case you’re wondering, none of these three words refer to soy-based vegetarian snacks. Instead, ToFu, MoFu, and BoFu are marketing portmanteaux, meaning top of funnel, middle of funnel, and bottom of funnel, respectively. Effectively nurturing inbound leads depends on creating and delivering the right type of content for each stage of the funnel.
ToFu, MoFu, and BoFu: a primer
Before we talk about what kind of content to deliver to prospects at each stage of the buyer’s journey, let’s take a closer look at what the terms ToFu, MoFu, and BoFu refer to and what your goals should be at each stage.
ToFu: top of the funnel
At the top of the sales funnel (ToFu), your goal is to draw in a wide audience of prospective leads, increasing brand awareness and customer engagement. This is the awareness stage of the buyer’s journey, and it represents your first impression. Leads at the top of the funnel are getting a sense of what your business does and your brand identity.
For ToFu leads, your goal isn’t conversion but simply to obtain contact information and generate interest. Says Gaetano DiNardi, Director of Demand Generation for Nextiva, ToFu “is where strangers become familiar with your brand for the first time… At this stage of the game, you don’t care about conversions; you care about piquing intrigue.”
MoFu: middle of the funnel
The middle of the funnel (MoFu), is the consideration stage of the buyer’s journey. This can be a tricky and uncertain stage as your leads continue to engage with your brand and learn about your products and services but remain unready to commit to purchase. “MoFu is usually the most complicated funnel stage because of how hard it is to define,” says DiNardi.
Ideally, by the MoFu stage, you should have a clearer idea of who your leads are and what they’re looking for. Your focus should be on continuing to educate your leads and situating your products and services as the solution to the challenges and needs of your prospects.
BoFu: bottom of the funnel
The bottom of the funnel (BoFu) is the decision stage of the buyer’s journey. You’ve established a relationship with your prospect during the MoFu stage, and your lead is now turning to you for specific information about your products and services. It’s at the BoFu stage that leads are ready to make a purchasing decision.
This is the stage when it’s all about conversion. Your goal is to inspire your lead to convert, helping them to realize that your business has the solutions they need. It’s important to note here that your goal is not to “sell,” but rather to make sure your leads know that you’re there to help.

Optimizing ToFu, MoFu, and BoFu content for lead nurturing
Once you have a clear idea of the stages of the sales funnel and your goals for each, it’s time to consider the right types of content to ensure that prospects receive exactly the right message for each step of the buyer’s journey.
ToFu content: generating engagement
At the top of the sales funnel, where your goal is to engage your audience and collect contact information from qualified prospects, your content needs to educate leads and establish thought leadership. ToFu content shouldn’t pressure your audience to make a purchase, but instead should be geared toward providing information that speaks to needs, challenges, and questions common to your target audience.
According to Coralie Wood, Director of Demand Generation at LoginRadius, “Top-of-funnel content needs to be much more digestible and informative to ensure you are positioned as a thought leader.”
Some types of content that work particularly well for the ToFu stage:
- Blog posts
- Infographics
- Video content
- Whitepapers
- eBooks
MoFu content: addressing prospects’ needs
At this challenging middle stage, your content should begin to establish your business as the solution to a prospect’s specific needs and challenges. This is the consideration stage, and your lead is in the process of evaluating all available information to prepare to make a purchasing decision. Developing the relationship requires that your content be highly informative about how your business is ready to meet your prospect’s needs.
Because of the “wide net of interested leads who haven’t been fully qualified,” says DiNardi, “if you are too shameless about plugging your products or services, you’ll come across as pushy and likely to turn off buyers.” Instead, he suggests being “helpful and knowledgeable, while guiding your prospects into the right decision.”
Effective content types for the MoFu stage include:
- Email campaigns
- Free templates or guides
- Product-to-product comparisons
- Webinars
- Case studies
BoFu content: inspiring conversions
Now that your ToFu and MoFu content have attracted and nurtured a qualified lead, it’s time for your BoFu content to convince your lead to convert. It’s the closing stage of the buyer’s journey, which means marketers should be directing prospective buyers toward content that sells. This type of content is about cementing a decision and helping your leads recognize that your business has the right solutions.
“It’s important to note here that BoFu content can also lead directly into validation. This starts to cross the line from traditional content marketing to things like product marketing and customer testimonials,” says Mike Baker, marketing director at Lola.com. “As you work closer to the bottom-of-the-marketing funnel, your content should shift from purely educational to a more consultative, product-focused and a ‘show-don’t -ell’ style of marketing.”

The biggest challenges for B2B marketing, according to a recent report? Finding leads that convert and engaging the right target audience.

Chief Marketer’s 2019 B2B Marketing Outlook report is out, and it’s full of revealing statistics for B2B marketers industry-wide. The survey studied 209 B2B marketers in more than 20 verticals, getting a bird’s eye view of biggest challenges and trends in B2B marketing.
Here are the top 10 stats you need to be aware of.

1) For 58% of respondents, measuring ROI is the top challenge surrounding social media marketing.
Measuring social media ROI is notoriously difficult, though certainly not impossible. For well over half of the survey respondents, it proved the greatest challenge when it comes to social media.
65% of respondents reported engagement as one of their biggest social media challenge, while 45% cited the challenge of having enough content. Adequate bandwidth to respond to social followers and post frequently and inadequate social budget (24% each) were lower on the list of social concerns.
2) Only 23% of brands have a dedicated social media team.
We’ve written before about how social media management is a herculean task that falls all-to-often to an overworked marketing team. Chief Marketing’s survey found that, for a vast majority of B2B brands (75%), their marketing team is in charge of maintaining social media presence.
Even as social media is becoming increasingly effective at ushering leads through the sales funnel, only 23% of brands surveyed have invested in a dedicated social media team, while 15% are outsourcing their social media management.
3) Articles/blog posts and reviews/customer testimonials are tied as the two most effective types of content for moving prospects through the sales funnel.

Following closely behind, 32% reported whitepapers and 31% reported video as most effective. Partner content, at 26%, came next, while social media is gaining efficacy, coming in at 22%.
Respondents reported that for all content types, the visual aspects were key. For Informa Engage, for example, more visual content is performing well, says Tricia Syed, Vice President for Marketing Strategy and Execution. “In some markets, traditional whitepapers and webinars are still hugely popular, but we’re getting more visual with e-books [to illustrate] data.”
4) 39% of survey respondents reported being unable to prove ROI to C-suite as the biggest obstacle for getting approval for marketing expenditures.
Just as proving social media ROI is a poses a challenge for B2B marketing, proving overall content marketing ROI to win C-suite buy-in can be equally daunting. 39% reported it as the biggest hurdle to getting marketing expenditures approved.
46% of respondents cited the challenge of budgets that are focused elsewhere, while 33% reported that executives still don’t understand the need for marketing expenditures.
5) For 60% of respondents, content marketing is the most valuable technique for lead nurturing.
Content marketing is reported by 60% of marketers as their most valuable technique for lead nurturing. Email marketing led the pack at 62%, while in-person marketing took a close third place at 57%. When it comes to lead nurturing for B2B marketing, social media was relatively low on the list, reported by only 20% of respondents as their most valuable technique.
6) Only 22% of respondents have an in-house editorial team dedicated to content creation.
While content marketing is overwhelmingly reported by marketers as being a highly effective technique for generating, nurturing, and converting leads, relatively few brands have chosen to invest in a dedicated in-house editorial team for content creation. Instead, a whopping 80% of marketers are charged with creating their own content.
“That’s a surprising disconnect,” says James Furbush, B2B marketing manager of Lord Hobo Brewing. “I’m not surprised marketing teams are creating content, but if you’re going to be that focused on content marketing, having an editorial team is an important investment.”
Perhaps even more surprisingly, only 23% of respondents are taking advantage of the opportunity to outsource content creation, an excellent alternative for companies who are unable to afford a dedicated in-house team.
7) 42% say that their organizations will increase martech budgets in 2019.
Martech, or the fusion of marketing and technology, is taking over B2B marketing. 42% of survey respondents reported that their martech budgets will be increasing in 2019, while 40% said that existing martech budgets will remain the same. Only 4% reported that they anticipate a decrease in martech budget.
When asked what types of martech they plan on investing in, 45% of respondents pointed to marketing automation, 43% to video, 40% to email, 38% to customer experience, and 37% to social media management.
Interestingly, despite all the discussion surrounding AI, only 9% of businesses surveyed report that they are considering investing in these technologies.
8) When it comes to generating new leads, 55% reported that finding leads that convert is their biggest challenge.
More than half of survey respondents pointed to the challenge of finding leads that ultimately convert as the greatest obstacle to generating new leads. 57% reported that their biggest challenge is getting targeted prospects to engage with their brands.
What’s interesting about these numbers is that, while marketers are reporting these issues as lead-generation obstacles, they are simultaneously pointing to content marketing as their most effective tool for lead nurturing and conversion.
9) For 44% of respondents, email is a top source of B2B leads.
When it comes to which channels are the largest sources of B2B leads, email leads the pack, with 44% of respondents putting it first. Online searches came in at a close second at 43%, and live events came in at 41%.
A respectable 36% of respondents cited content marketing as a top source of B2B leads, while 22% pointed to social media.
Knowing where leads are coming from is only part of the picture. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the channel that produced the leads with the highest ROI was email for just under half (49%) of survey respondents.
10) 56% say cost of conversion is the metric that matters most in marketing attribution.
When asked which metrics matter most in marketing attribution, cost of conversion topped the list at 56%, followed closely by amount of time to convert at 53%. Other important metrics included channel (34%), first click (29%), and last click (22%).
“At the end of the day, the most important takeaway when setting up campaign attribution is to think about your goal,” said one respondent. “Start with the end in mind, reverse engineer your marketing campaign, and set up ‘mile markers’ along the way to track trends in your prospects’ digital footprints.”
